The Importance of Data Management

Data management is a procedure that involves establishing and enforcing procedures, policies and processes to manage data throughout its entire life cycle. It ensures that data is easily accessible and useful, which facilitates regulatory compliance and informed decision-making, and ultimately provides businesses with an edge in the market.

The importance of effective data management has grown significantly as organizations automate their business processes, leverage software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications and deploy data warehouses, among other initiatives. The result is a proliferation of data that must be consolidated and delivered to business intelligence (BI) and analytics systems, enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and machine learning and generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for advanced insights.

Without a clear data management plan, businesses could end up with data silos that are not compatible and inconsistent data sets that hinder the ability to manage business intelligence and analytics applications. Inadequate data management can undermine employee and customer confidence.

To tackle these issues, it’s essential that companies make a plan for data management (DMP) that includes the processes and people required to manage all types of data. For instance an DMP can help researchers determine the naming conventions for files they should employ to structure data sets for long-term storage and easy access. It can also contain data workflows that specify the steps to follow to cleanse, validate and integrating raw data sets and refined data sets in order to make them suitable for analyses.

A DMP can be used by organizations that collect consumer data to ensure compliance with privacy laws at the state and global level, such as the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union or California’s Consumer Privacy Act. It can also guide the creation of policies and procedures to address security threats to data and audits.
